What is Bengal?
Bengal is a former province of India on the Bay of Bengal. The Bay of Bengal is a large body of water that is part of the Indian Ocean. Bengal now belongs to two different countries. West Bengal is still a part of India, but East Bengal is a part of Pakistan. The whole of Bengal covers an area of about 84,000 square miles, about one-third the size of the state of Texas. The people of Bengal speak a language called Bangla. More than half of them belong to the Muslim religion and almost all follow Hinduism. Most of the people are farmers.
