THE THERMOMETER AND THE MERCURY

The thermometer and injecting the mercury

A 19-year-old resident of Nadia was involved in a strange 'research' by breaking the thermometer and injecting the mercury. Rupam Biswas (name changed), a young man studying in an engineering college in Chandigarh, was actually doing serious research on his own body. This 'lethal' research was done by pouring the mercury of the thermometer into the injection, pushing the injection into different parts of the body. Rupam was finally saved from great danger by the efforts of his mother and the intervention of the doctors of Calcutta Medical College.

On Wednesday, the doctors of the ENT department of medical department took out the coil of mercury that was twisted near the trachea. Departmental associate professor Dr. Diptanshu Mukhopadhyay said, 'The young man wanted to do this strange research after reading in a journal. He had read there that there is no problem if mercury is taken into the body by injection. He went to see whether it was right or wrong by researching himself. He should have known that mercury is very dangerous for the human body. A delay in the operation could have resulted in a fatal problem.

According to hospital sources, the incident was a month and a half ago. Rupam did this fatal experiment in a college in Chandigarh. Broke two thermometers in the hostel bathroom. Then he filled his mercury injection. Then Rupam pushed the injection into three places in the body. One is in the neck—near the thyroid gland. He also injected mercury in the stomach and left hand. In no time these three places swell.

Roopam's mother saw such strange swelling on her hands, neck, and stomach. He was admitted to a nursing home in Nadia. Mercury is removed from the stomach. The whole incident is known. The young man was taken to the medical center without delay. The doctors conducted various tests and found that mercury is coiled in the throat very close to the trachea. If it somehow gets into the airways, it can cause pneumonia or other life-threatening infections. Then a team of five doctors surgically removed the stuck mercury mass.

Doctors said, lessons should be learned from the incident of Ropam, no one should apply them to themselves or anyone after reading an article in a journal or research paper.
