India has a vast workforce engaged in the unorganized sector, which often lacks access to social security benefits such as health insurance, pensions, or accident compensation. Recognizing the vulnerability of these workers, the Government of West Bengal launched the Samajik Suraksha Yojana (SSY)—a groundbreaking initiative that consolidates various welfare schemes under a single umbrella to provide comprehensive social security coverage.
Launched in 2017, the Samajik Suraksha Yojana (SSY) aims to provide social security benefits to unorganized sector workers in West Bengal. This integrated scheme combines multiple welfare schemes and simplifies the delivery of benefits such as:
Provident Fund
Health benefits
Education assistance
Death and disability compensation
By enrolling in SSY, a worker and their family members gain access to an array of welfare services designed to improve their financial and social well-being.
Universal Social Security: Extend coverage to all unorganized sector workers in West Bengal.
Consolidated Benefits: Bring together multiple schemes to reduce complexity and improve efficiency.
Financial Inclusion: Encourage savings and ensure financial support during emergencies.
Health & Education Support: Provide assistance to workers’ families to break the cycle of poverty.
To be eligible under Samajik Suraksha Yojana:
The applicant must be a resident of West Bengal.
Age should be between 18 to 60 years.
The individual should be an unorganized worker (e.g., rickshaw puller, construction worker, bidi worker, agricultural laborer, etc.).
The applicant should not be a member of any other similar social security scheme by central/state governments.

Since its launch, the Samajik Suraksha Yojana has enrolled millions of workers across West Bengal. Key achievements include:
Improved access to healthcare for low-income families.
Educational empowerment for children of laborers.
Financial resilience for families during times of death or accidents.
Gender inclusion with a high number of female beneficiaries.
Lack of awareness in remote areas.
Difficulty in digital registration for some workers.
Irregular contributions due to income instability.
Strengthen outreach programs through NGOs and local bodies.
Simplify the digital process with multilingual mobile apps.
Provide incentives for regular contribution and renewal.
The Samajik Suraksha Yojana is a commendable step by the Government of West Bengal to protect its unorganized workforce. By providing a safety net through financial assistance, health care, education support, and more, SSY plays a crucial role in promoting inclusive growth and social equity. As the scheme continues to evolve, further digitalization, awareness, and ease of access will determine its long-term success and impact.
